Perhaps with the HD camera and digital projection, as we see it used now, and with the widespread use of digital ‘correction’ of the image, cinema finally joins the tyranny of ‘perfection’, the realm already inhabited by the television talk show, the prestige novel, the fashion magazine, the bourgeois pop song. A perfect, terrifying, nauseating smooth blankness, a rounding-off of the universe, the reduction of the possibilities of perception only to the banal; indeed, the victory of banality. Finally, the established order can look to claim cinema as part of itself, wholly and fully, its reality now able to match its reality (with all that entails).
